Worked examples

The formula is the same every time: unit price = total price ÷ total amount, where total amount is the size of one container times the number of containers.

A 2-pack of ketchup costs $14.08. There are 44 ounces of ketchup in each bottle. What is the price per ounce?

Answer: $0.16 per ounce.

Total amount: 2 × 44 oz = 88 oz. Unit price = $14.08 ÷ 88 = $0.16.

A 6-pack of apple juice is $10.08 and each bottle holds 8 ounces. What is the price per ounce?

Answer: $0.21 per ounce.

Total amount: 6 × 8 oz = 48 oz. Unit price = $10.08 ÷ 48 = $0.21.

If 8 bowls cost $20.00, what is the cost of 1 bowl?

Answer: $2.50 per bowl.

Total amount: 8 bowls. Unit price = $20.00 ÷ 8 = $2.50.

Multiply the size of one container by the number of containers to get the total ounces, then divide the total price by that number.

Are ounces and fluid ounces the same?

No. Ounces measure weight and fluid ounces measure volume, so the calculator will not compare one against the other.
